Stripes bag
several ready-mades from plastic bags, dimensions variable, 2023.
This work was realized during a residency at Kiosko Galeria, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia in 2023.
Rooted in the popular imagery of Bolivia, the blue and white striped plastic bags used as garbage bags are omnipresent in the urban space. From my European point of view, this motif is strongly associated with the seaside aesthetic, very present on the beaches (umbrellas, deckchairs, etc.). Therefore, in the Bolivian context this motif seems to me to evoke a loss, perhaps that of its access to the sea in 1883, during a Chilean invasion. As a placebo, horizon lines materialized by stripes…
Declined in various colors, I explore the motif of the bag by games of superposition, seeking to create visual vibrations. The resulting gradations recall the traditional textile design of the Awayos, focused on geometric shapes.
